Despite the calendar, an early temperature plunge and heavy snow has pushed Minnesota and much of the upper midwest clearly into winter. For those of you who are determined to ride through cold and snow it's time to buy or bring out the fat-tire bike. But what do the rest of us fair-weather cyclists do for the next 5-6 months (yes, 5-6 months!!)? If you are a lover of all things seasonal, here are a few suggestions: snowboarding • skiing • skating • cross country skiing • fat-tire cycling • ice fishing • hiking • snow shoeing • sliding • ski-skating • polar plunging • ice sailing • snuggling • shopping • snowman building • snowball fighting • reading • baking • hot tubbing • hitting the gym • sleeping • eating • football watching • mall walking • geocaching • drinking • snow fort building • movie watching • entertaining • writing • snow tubing • museum exploring • board gaming • gambling • snowmobiling • camping • shoveling • dog walking • fire building • bathing • traveling to someplace warm!

Though I’m retired, I’ve biked in snowy and/ or icy conditions many times. Fresh snow can be navigated via a fat-tired bike with no fenders and low pressure knobby tires. Packed down snow or ice requires studded bike tires and practice navigating under such conditions. Often a bike is the fastest way to travel at times such as that, when two-wheel-drive motor vehicles can’t move hardly at all!
